Error Correction Level

Error Correction Level is a capability of QR codes that allows them to remain scannable even if they are dirty, damaged, or partially covered, using Reed-Solomon codes.

Error Correction Level is a built-in feature of QR codes that uses Reed-Solomon mathematical algorithms to reconstruct lost or obscured data. This allows the QR code to be scanned successfully even if parts of it are damaged, dirty, torn, or covered by a custom logo.

There are four standard error correction levels, each offering a different threshold of damage recovery. As the error correction level increases, the QR code density increases (more modules are added to store the redundant recovery data).

The Four Error Correction Levels

  1. Level L (Low): Reconstructs up to 7% of lost data. Offers the lowest density pattern, which is ideal for very clean digital displays or small print surfaces.
  2. Level M (Medium): Reconstructs up to 15% of lost data. This is the default setting for most general QR codes, providing a balanced trade-off between scannability and density.
  3. Level Q (Quartile): Reconstructs up to 25% of lost data. Often used in industrial environments where codes are prone to getting dirty or scratched.
  4. Level H (High): Reconstructs up to 30% of lost data. Required when incorporating a brand logo or custom image inside the center of the QR code pattern.

Why Error Correction Matters for Custom QR Codes

  • Brand Logo Integration: To place a company logo in the center of a QR code, you must obscure the central modules of the code. Using Level H error correction ensures the rest of the code retains enough redundant data paths to remain 100% scannable.
  • Physical Durability: QR codes printed on outdoor billboards, tables, packaging, or wristbands are exposed to weathering, tearing, and smudging. Higher error correction levels prevent these physical issues from breaking the code.
  • Optimizing Scan Distance: Lower error correction levels (like Level L) have simpler visual grids, which can sometimes be scanned from further away compared to dense Level H codes under identical lighting conditions.
