Deep Linking

Deep linking is a technology that allows mobile links to route users directly to specific screens or sections within a native mobile application, bypassing homepages or desktop web fallbacks.

Deep Linking is a routing technology that directs mobile users to a specific location inside a native app (such as a product page, profile page, or checkout cart) rather than launching the app’s general homepage or opening a fallback website in a mobile browser.

In the context of QR codes, deep linking is essential for creating high-converting mobile experiences. When a customer scans a printed QR code, deep links ensure they are routed seamlessly into the installed application to perform actions like redeeming a coupon, reviewing a business, or completing a payment.

Types of Deep Links

  1. Standard Deep Links: Standard URIs (e.g., myapp://products/123) that open specific screens if the app is already installed. If the app is not installed, they fail to load, resulting in an error.
  2. Deferred Deep Links: Advanced links that direct users to the App Store or Google Play Store if the app is not installed, and then open the specific product screen automatically after the app is downloaded and launched.
  3. Universal Links (iOS) & App Links (Android): Standard HTTPS URLs (e.g., https://mybrand.com/products/123) that native operating systems intercept. If the app is installed, it launches the app immediately; otherwise, it loads the webpage in the browser as a fallback.

Why Deep Linking Matters for QR Codes

  • Reduced Friction: Guide users directly to target actions, increasing app engagement and conversion rates.
  • Smart App Launching: Launch native apps like Instagram, Spotify, YouTube, or Google Maps directly from a scan, rather than opening web versions requiring login.
  • Unified Campaigns: Use a single QR code that works on desktop (opens website), iOS (opens native app/App Store), and Android (opens native app/Play Store).
  • Personalized Onboarding: Direct new users to specific welcome screens or localized content post-install.

Deep Linking in Practice

When designing dynamic QR codes on QR Zam, deep linking enables features like Smart Routing and review gating. For instance, scanning a Trustpilot QR code triggers a deep link redirection (https://www.trustpilot.com/evaluate/{domain}) which leverages Universal/App Links to open the native Trustpilot app on the scanner's phone, allowing them to leave a review instantly.
